Millennials’ Satisfaction with Their Jobs Doesn’t Increase Overall Happiness

Two in five (38.6%) Americans are satisfied with their current job situation according to a Prosper Insights & Analytics™ analysis of the latest American Pulse™ data. With a Job Satisfaction Score of 102.6, Millennials have a markedly higher rating than Boomers (92.6). The scores are an index to Adults 18+ of an aggregate job satisfaction score, which includes four key areas: benefits, work/life balance, compensation, and position/job within a company.
Millennials seem to be more satisfied on all employment fronts when compared to Boomers. Higher satisfaction regarding benefits, work/life balance and compensation drives the Millennials’ Job Satisfaction Score. On the other hand, Boomers tend to be less satisfied regarding each of these different categories. Additional analysis reveals that dissatisfaction with insurance, stress level, and growth opportunities are negatively impacting Boomers’ overall score.

While Millennials tend to be satisfied with their job, they are not necessarily happier with their life. This month’s Happiness Indicator (indexed to Adults 18+) for the youngest generation is tracking at 93.1, which is the lowest of all groups. Boomers are happier than the younger generation with a score of 102.8. While Shawn Achor, CEO of Good Think Inc., believes that the secret to better work performance is happiness, Prosper’s analysis indicates that happiness doesn’t necessarily lead to higher job satisfaction. Either way, it looks like both generations have something to learn from each other.
These insights derive from the June American Pulse™ Survey, conducted by Prosper. The survey included 2,537 respondents from both the American Pulse and Critical Mix survey panels. Margin of error is +/- 2.0% at a 95% confidence level.
